One week foundation in art therapy

This course is intended for people who may consider art therapy as a career and want to train as an Art Therapist. It is also useful for healthcare workers who want to gain a better understanding of art within a care context.

Monday 17th - Friday 21st October 2022

This course will offer an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of art therapy with different client groups. It also has an experiential element, with a whole day of workshops using a range of art making directives to help participants integrate theories learnt on the course. No previous formal experience of art making is required, but it is important to be prepared to take part in workshops.


PLEASE NOTE: Delegates will be required to have a small amount of art materials for the week. A small list will be provided prior to the week starting. Most materials can be found in and around the home, any specific art making materials will be at minimal cost to delegates.

Mary Rose Brady State Registered Consultant Art Psychotherapist, Parenting Practitioner and Lecturer, Mary Rose Brady has over 25 years’ experience specialising in the impact of trauma in child and adolescent development. Mary Rose’s interest in the unique role that making art plays in trauma intervention began early in her career when co establishing the Post Graduate Art Psychotherapy course in the Netherlands and was involved in research projects in Asylum Seeker Centres assessing the impact of war on children’s drawing development. During “the fall of the iron curtain” she was invited to present at a Governmental Conference in St Petersburg on the therapeutic use of art with traumatised populations. She continues to work with, support and advise charities on the therapeutic use of art with trauma and developmental delay in the UK and overseas and has supported work with trafficked children in India and the Middle East. Mary Rose is a guest lecturer on trauma, attachment and child development at a number of Universities and Institutes including the University of Hertfordshire, the Institute of Arts in Education, the Anna Freud Centre and the British Association of Art Therapists. Mary Rose was previously Director of Operations and Lead advisor for Children and Young People’s Mental Health at the British Association of Art Therapists and Head of Parenting and Creative Therapies at the Children’s Charity Coram.


Anthea Hendry is an art psychotherapist who has specialised in working with children and families with experience of early trauma and abuse in various settings including Social Services, the voluntary sector and the NHS. She was Principal Art psychotherapist in Leeds CAMHS where she set up an adoption clinic to provide specialists assessments and therapeutic work for adoptive families which included dyadic parent-child art therapy. She now works as a private and independent practitioner, supervisor and trainer. She co-edited Creative Therapies for Complex Trauma: Helping Children and Families in foster care, kinship care or adoption (JKP 2017).


Neil Winter has a Bachelor of Laws degree and master’s degree in Law with distinction, and is a highly specialised barrister with a top legal 100 company. Neil has finished a soon to be published novel. Neil devotes his personal time and study to exploring and understanding current and emergent knowledge and therapies specific to C-PTSD and early trauma, and works as an expert by experience in an effort to assist other fellow sufferers. Neil's adopted mission is to ensure his achievements and aspirations, both personal and professional, are not defined by his early trauma or limited by his deteriorated mental health. For example, he attained the highest distinction in his master's degree whilst at the peak of his mental health issues. In achieving his goals he hopes it will serve as an inspiration and motivation for other mental health sufferers.   


Ali Coles has an MA in Art Therapy and is an Art Psychotherapist for Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, working for the Complex Psychological Interventions Team in community adult mental health services. She is also a visiting lecturer at the University of South Wales and an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Art Therapy.  She has written several articles for peer-reviewed journals, including one with Neil Winter - ‘The silent intermediary’: a co-authored exploration of a client’s experience of art psychotherapy for C-PTSD' (International Journal of Art Therapy, 2021). She has co-edited a book with Helen Jury - ‘Art Therapy in Museums and Galleries: Reframing Practice’ (Jessica Kingsley, 2020) - and is working on a further co-edited book on innovation in art psychotherapy, to be published in 2022. 


Alex McDonald has been an HCPC registered Art Therapist specialising in working with children since 2005. Alex has an MRes in Clinical Research and is the appointed Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Art Therapy. She currently works as a Manager and Tutor at the British Association of Art Therapists.  


Diane Bruce is a qualified Art Psychotherapist registered with the Healthcare Professionals Council (HCPC). She completed a two-year IAPT infant mental health post graduate diploma at UCL Anna Freud Centre where she also qualified in Video Intervention Positive Parenting (VIPP). She underwent five years of personal psychoanalysis as part of her training. Diane joined North-East London Foundation Trust (NELFT) in 2015 and currently works for the Perinatal Parent-Infant Mental Health Service (PPIMHS) Maternal Mental Health Team (MMHT). She is a clinical and safeguarding supervisor and an integrative practitioner informed by attachment, systemic and psychodynamic theory. Diane is a member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) where she teaches CPD in art therapy practice within perinatal parent infant mental health. She has also contributed as an author to Arts in Health books and to the International Journal of Art Therapy (IJAT).


Ioanna Xenophontes is the Learning and Development Specialist for patient experience and Sweeney programmes at the Point of Care Foundation. A social enterprise specialising in humanising healthcare through co-production, quality improvement methods and reflective practice. She works with the wider patient experience team to design and deliver open and bespoke learning programmes:

Prior to this, Ioanna worked since 2014 as a lived experience practitioner, facilitator, and researcher for Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and external partners. She is a lived experience advisor to the International Journal of Art Therapy and lectures at several universities on her experience of art therapy, crisis, and working with co-production methodologies. Prior to 2014, Ioanna worked within managerial roles in the print industry. Ioanna is passionate about arts therapies, person-centred care, trauma-informed approaches and social inclusion.
