Introduction to EMDR in art therapy for children, young people and adults

EMDR is a treatment that was originally developed for people who had a diagnosis of PTSD/C-PTSD to process traumatic life events. This course aims to introduce practitioners working with children, young people and adults to the potential of EMDR as a useful tool for their clinical practice and will include signposting to training and accreditation.

**This course is open to all qualified professionals and trainees. **

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive treatment that helps the client to process and recover from past experiences that are affecting daily functioning. The premise of EMDR is a non-verbal treatment that uses bilateral stimulation to support the client’s ability to remain in the optimum window of arousal, whilst simultaneously desensitising and processing distressing material.

Due to avoidance and intrusion being two of the diagnostic criteria for C-PTSD/ PTSD, many clients with a range of ages and presentations can benefit from EMDR. For those who may not find verbal approaches the most accessible way of making sense of their experience EMDR can be used alongside art therapy.

The course will outline the basics of EMDR, with case examples to develop an understanding of the processes involved. It will also give participants an opportunity to have a safe somatic experience of bilateral stimulation to experience how this tool can be used in practice.

On completion of this course you will be able to:
• Understand the basic principles of EMDR
• Define the differences in using EMDR when working with children, young people and adults
• Understand how existing art therapy skills can be integrated within an EMDR framework.
