Peer review training

A key task of the British Association of Art Therapists is to act as the learned society for the profession and the International Journal of Art Therapy is the primary record of this activity. The validity of what appears in the journal rests on sound peer review with the BAAT membership forming the basis of that peer system. The development of art therapy literature that is truly representative of contemporary practice rests on the widest possible involvement of BAAT members.

**Open to qualified art therapists. Any art therapist (member of BAAT) with three years’ post qualifying experience, who has successfully completed this peer review training, is eligible to review submissions relevant to their experience**

 

Through the process of peer reviewing BAAT members can support the development of art therapy literature by using their valuable practice and lived experiences to help authors publish papers which advance the understanding of how art therapy contributes to effective interventions.

 

The IJAT Board are dedicated to acknowledging and challenging the systemic and institutional barriers that may exist in the realms of scholarly publishing, for those who may not fit dominant norms in the profession. Our recent introduction of a new opinion piece category was developed in response to concerns that publishing research and practice papers only limited the development of art therapy knowledge due to restricting opportunities to include differing epistemologies and world views.

 

We strongly encourage those who may feel they have unique lived and professional experience to join our peer review network as we continue to broaden the network’s specialisms with current but not limited focus on intersectionality, anti-oppressive frameworks and antiracist research methodologies. We acknowledge that sustainable working relies on reciprocation, mutuality and respect, particularly as the journal is run and maintained through the labour of dedicated unsalaried volunteers.

 

As a peer reviewer you will be valued as a vital part of the intellectual life of the profession, contributing to the development of art therapy literature. You will read a wide range of international submissions related to your areas of experience. You will be gaining an insight into current thinking in the profession, developing your critical analytical and writing skills and adding to your CPD portfolio.

 

The commitment you give will be flexible; you will decide on each occasion whether to accept an invitation to take on a review. This means the role can easily be fitted around other commitments. This one-day training will start with an introduction to the general concept of peer review, address the strengths and limitations of the peer review process, and outline how the role works within the IJAT structure. We will explain what we expect from a review, address common issues relating to peer review and answer any questions that you may have. The training offers guidance for those unfamiliar with academic publishing and supports reviewers in developing critical thinking in relation to art therapy publications that honours ethical practice and challenges held power in the profession, as we continue to strive as a journal to embody the intention of anti-oppressive, co-produced and evidence-based practice.
