Attachment and the arts 2021 - The disembodied image: exploring the impact of the pandemic on personal and professional attachments

Since March 2020, we have become used to interacting personally and professionally in a curiously disembodied way as ‘heads and shoulders’ on screens. Our usual non-verbal, mostly body-based, communication cues have been altered. Importantly, touch-based gestures of comfort and compassion have been forbidden in-person and are impossible on screen. Foundations that underpin our personal and professional identities have been shaken, and so has our sense of belonging and attachment.

For art therapists, artmaking also became a disembodied experience: with practice moving to mostly online delivery, the physical witnessing of artmaking, itself the source of so much incidental communication, has no longer been possible.

Facing these challenges, art therapists have responded creatively and adapted to online work. Some unexpected positive factors also emerged, such as better access for people who live in isolated areas. Indeed, feedback about this conference being online last year was overwhelmingly positive as the event was accessible to many more in the UK and abroad. It now feels timely to explore how these challenges and opportunities have impacted on art therapy and on practitioners. This conference aims to reflect on the impact of the pandemic on our personal and professional attachments, and to learn and grow from our experiences.
