BAAT Safeguarding Level 1: The Role of the Art Therapist in Safeguarding Children & Young People

Safeguarding is now an integral element of the Art therapist’s role. It is imperative that Art therapists carry out this function effectively and in accordance with legislation.

This course is open to all who wish to attend and provides a recent historical context of child protection with the aim of clarifying the duties & responsibilities of Art Therapists in safeguarding children as part of today’s C&YP work force. Whether working independently or as an employee of an organisation, this course will explore duties, responsibilities and reporting lines informed by the new updated “Working Together” 2017. The course will help explore: signs and symptoms of abuse, verbal and non verbal disclosure, when and how to make an onward referral and will equip you with a “protocol template” to better protect children and risk manage your case load.

You will learn:
A recent historical context of child protection and how it has shaped today’s legislation.
How to fulfil your safeguarding duties as part of today’s C&YP workforce 
What to consider when conducting a risk assessment 
How to identify signs and symptoms of abuse in C&YP 
How to identify non verbal disclosures within art therapy 
How, when and to whom to make a referral
