Leeds Art Therapy in Sessional, Private and Independent Practice

This training day is for experienced and newly qualified art therapists who are thinking of becoming self-employed as private, sessional or independent practitioners. The aim of the course is to offer art therapists all the practical tips they need to set up their practice and to prepare them for this work.

This course will equip art therapists to work safely, ethically and legally as self-employed private or independent practitioners. The course will cover HCPC competencies, BAAT Private Practice guidelines, GDPR, ethics, and practicalities of setting up as self-employed therapist. The two convenors will also share their experiences of working in private practice followed by small group work, discussions and time for questions and reflections. Participants will also be given a resource pack of material to enable them to continue their learning after the training.

• Practicalities: fees, contracts, accounts, insurance, venue
• GDPR
• Differences between private practice and other forms of independent practice
• Private Practice guidelines
• Working within competencies

Anthea Hendry is an art therapist currently working as a private and independent practitioner, supervisor and trainer. Previously she was Principal Art Psychotherapist in Leeds Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. Before qualifying as an art therapist she worked as a Local Authority social worker and then as a manager in the Voluntary sector.  She is an associate on The Art Therapy Northern Programme in Sheffield. She co-edited a book Creative Therapies for Complex Trauma: helping children and families in foster care, kinship care and adoption, and is  the author of various journal articles and book chapters including a contribution to the recently published At Therapy in Private Practice book.   She is actively involved in the BAAT Private Practice SIG and Art Therapists working with Children and Families SIG (ATCAF). 


Themis Kyriakidou is an art therapist currently working as a supervisor and private practitioner, as well as a senior CAMHS practitioner and a specialist practitioner in the Youth Justice Service. She has years of experience working within forensic services and community services with young people, families and adults within the NHS and privately.
Themis has completed further studies such as in Dyadic Art Therapy, DDP (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy), EMDR and in Family Therapy. She has an MSc in Forensic Psychology and Criminology with specific modules on profiling, selection and recruitment. She is one of the associate practitioners at the Art Therapy Northern Programme, in Sheffield and she co-facilitates employment related workshops for trainees. She has contributed a chapter to the recently published book: Art Therapy in Private Practice.
