How to employ an art therapist

In the UK, art therapists/art psychotherapists have to be by law on the Health and Care Professions Council register. Membership of the BAAT, whilst not mandatory, is always a positve indication of an art therapist's professionality and is required by many employers as such.

Art Therapists can be employed on PAYE and many work as self-employed practitioners.

If employed on PAYE, rates are negotiable depending on location, level of experience and job demands. Within the NHS, art therapists are on Agenda for Change (AfC) pay scales and bandings go from Band 6 to Band 8. In 2014, the basic starting full time salary for an art therapist is £25,783. Click here for more information on AfC pay scales.

If self-employed, rates are also negotiable on the same basis as above and the BAAT issues recommended rates of pay. BAAT Sessional Guidelines revised 2019.pdf

The BAAT offers free advice to employers on job descriptions, personal specifications and conditions of employment. It also provides an efficient advertising service UK wide (most UK art therapists are BAAT members) at competitive rates. Please email for further information.
