Exploring the Secrets of Personal Snapshots and Family Albums: An Introduction to PhotoTherapy Techniques
Convenor: Judy Weiser, R.Psych., A.T.R.
Monday 21st September 2009 9.45am to 4.30pm
Venue: Dragon Hall, 17 Stukeley Street, London WC2 5LT
PhotoTherapy Techniques use people's personal snapshots, family albums, and pictures taken by others (and the feelings, memories, and thoughts these evoke) to deepen and enhance their therapeutic process in ways not possible using words alone.
Since the emotional contents of any photograph are always more important than its visual details, clients' snapshots and family photos can be powerful yet safe nonverbal "bridges" that quickly connect them to memories, feelings, values, and information far below conscious awareness -- along with deeply-held beliefs, expectations, and judgments that these produce.
This one-day workshop is intended for Arts Therapists, Psychotherapists, Psychologists, Counsellors and Mental Health Workers whose work would benefit from an introduction to PhotoTherapy Techniques. Please note that this workshop includes participatory exercises (which are voluntary and not for personal therapy purposes).
Participants do not need any prior experience with cameras or photographic art. Trainees will need a reference from a tutor and will be asked not to take on the role of therapist in the role plays.

It is part of a larger "consult" Judy has been doing for Kodak about how photos can be used to help people feel better and strengthen relationships (topics which are, of course, close to the heart of all interested in PhotoTherapy, Photo Art Therapy, or Therapeutic Photography!)
More about this (and survey connected with it) is at: http://www.kodak.com/go/smile and a longer article about it is at: http://www.healthnewsdigest.com/news/Guest_Columnist_710/Photo_Therapy_ It_Can_Change_Your_Life.shtml
