INTRODUCTION TO THE PROFESSION OF ART THERAPY

Bristol

Saturday 17th May 2008
10.00 am – 5.00 pm

The Southville Centre, Beauley Road, Southville, Bristol BS3 1QG

Convenors: Ben Anthony & Jo Beedell

Fee: £80 including refreshments and lunch

This day workshop will be beneficial for people who are potentially interested in developing a career as an Art Therapist. Whether you are starting to shape your professional path or want to change an established work career, this workshop will help you to find out if the profession of Art Therapy may suit your needs. It may also be of interest to other professionals who work along side Art Therapists and want to be more informed about how they practice.

The workshop will include a presentation of some of the main concepts of Art Therapy including a 'hands on' art materials section, a case study, examples of Art Therapy in practice, a guide to some of the theoretical background underpinning Art Therapy and pointers to further reading and training.

The workshop will be run by Jo Beedell and Ben Anthony, who between them have several years of experience in running groups and working with a wide range of client groups.

"Art is more than the production of beautiful or even expressive objects for others to contemplate and admire, but is essentially a process by which we explore our inner and outer environments and learn to live with them."
Christopher Small - Music Education, Society

BEN ANTHONY has 15 years experience of delivering art therapy group work and of working with individuals. For many years he has worked with adults with severe and enduring mental health needs. He has worked as an art therapist in a psychiatric hospital, a child guidance unit/secondary school, a residential detoxification and assessment unit and in Holloway Prison. At present he is working in a Community Mental Health Team and does regular work for Penny Brohn Cancer Care.

Ben practices in a psychodynamic manner and is particularly influenced by object relations, humanistic and existential approaches to art therapy.

He has regularly given talks and run workshops about art therapy, including to staff teams and colleagues. He facilitated a day workshop about art therapy to the students on a NEBS course at Kings College London (1994) and gave a talk to the Forensic Art Therapies Advisory Group conference at the Tavistock Institute (2003) about his work in Holloway Prison. He attended a day course (2006) entitled 'Articulating Art Therapy' put on by The British Association of Art Therapists.

JO BEEDELL qualified in 2001. She has worked as an art therapist with pre school children with special needs and their parents. She has also worked in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, in primary and secondary education and with adults in Inner City Mental Health services and with groups of Young Carers. She has 14 years experience of running groups for parents with Parentline Plus, whose structured courses offer training in skills and support for all parents.

Jo presently works as an art therapist for Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formerly Bristol Cancer Help Centre) with groups of cancer patients and their supporters, and is a supervisor for an art therapist working in a prison. Jo also runs day workshops in arts and crafts in Somerset teaching basic techniques in ceramics, raku, batik, textiles, drawing and painting.
