Tony Chenery

BAAT Council Member 2009-2010

I have worked as an Art Psychotherapist in the NHS for over 20 years. Currently I manage an Arts Therapies department in Scotland. I have also taught on Arts Therapies in Scotland, Finland, Russia and Georgia. I have maintained an active stance within BAAT, with spells as West of Scotland regional co-ordinator and as Council member. In the past I have contributed to the creation of BAAT CPD recommendations. Most recently I have focused on helping to build the professional profile and strategic functioning of BAAT and Arts Therapies networking structures in Scotland. I represent Arts Therapies on an AHP & mental health action group within the Scottish Government and am Vice Chair of the Scottish Arts Therapists Managers and Leads group.

I remain a strong advocate of locating Scottish activism on behalf of the arts therapies professions within the strategic professional development brought forward by BAAT and the other professional bodies. I have encouraged others to take up roles on behalf of Council and to this effect the Scottish contribution has grown in recent years. Awareness has grown regarding the specificity of practice in the Scottish context and the need for a local organisation of Art Psychotherapists together with other Arts Therapists, to advance the professions north of the border. In turn the contribution made to BAAT stemming from this organised Scottish effort is also increasingly apparent.
