Further Guidance for anybody who has been banded at Band 6 (issued 17th August 2005)

For those who feel they have been wrongly banded at Band 6 the following advice may help. For all reviews of bandings refer to the Amicus Guidance on Undergoing a Review of your Matching (pdf)
We suggest in many cases to be banded at Band 6 panels may have deflated certain factors. (Please refer to the AFC guidance for further information)
These factors are:
- Communications and Relationship Skills
- Analytical and Judgemental Skills
- Policy and Service Development
- Possibly HR
- Possibly R&D
- Mental Effort
These are all functions of the arts therapist working autonomously as a practitioner. No experienced Arts Therapist should match at the level for the Band 6 profile. This is an entry level profile. We would vision that a newly qualified Arts Therapist should be at this level for no more than 2 years and as little as a few months as the higher levels of the Band 7 profile can be evidenced. BAAT and Amicus continue to propose that the Band 6 profile should not exist and the preceptorship gateway on Band 7 should have been used for ensuring that newly qualified are competent to work autonomously. Comparisons can be made between the levels on the Band 6 and those for other professions e.g. Mental Effort - compare yourself with a Clinical Psychologist or SLT and for communication compare with a psychologist.
