Learning Disabilities Conference: Creative Discoveries

Exploring the Impact of Arts Therapies and creative approaches with people who have a learning disability in the UK. This conference offers a unique opportunity to explore the impact of the Arts Therapies and creative approaches being used in the UK with people who have learning disabilities.

The conference programme brings together people with learning disabilities who have first-hand experience of arts therapies and service-user led research with national leaders in politics and health, academics, and arts therapists. This conference draws together speakers associated with each of the UK Arts Therapies professional bodies and will provide examples of service user involvement and collaboration and current practice and research.

Presentations will include:

Baroness Sheila Hollins, Emeritus professor of the psychiatry of learning disability at St George's University of London, crossbench life peer in the House of Lords, founder of Books Beyond Words.

Dr Dominic Slowie, National Clinical Director for Learning Disability for NHS England.

Professor Andrew Jahoda, Professor of Learning Disabilities (Mental Health & Wellbeing), University of Glasgow.

Ami Woods, ResearchNet (Learning Disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Disorder), London Borough of Merton

Seren Grime, Dramatherapist, Aneurin Bevan Health Board and British Association of Dramatherapists.

Dr Simon Hackett, Clinical Academic Art Therapist, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust & Newcastle University and British Association of Art Therapists.

Jackie Edwards, Dance Movement Psychotherapist, Edge Hill University and Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy UK.

Wendy Ruck, Lead Clinical Specialist Music Therapist, Head of Arts Therapies at Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and British Association for Music Therapy.

Invitation to submit abstracts for academic posters. Academic posters are invited on the topic of arts therapies or using creative approaches with people who have learning disabilities. Posters should report on a piece of work carried out in a systematic way, be that research, an evaluation, survey, service user involvement, or literature review. Please submit a brief abstract of no more than 150 words including the headings - Title, Subject, Methods, and Findings to val@baat.org by no later than 30th September 2016. Fee: £115

We have reserved 16 reduced places for unemployed qualified HCPC registered Arts Therapists and trainees on a qualifying MA Arts Therapies programme at £50 on a first come first serve basis. These places will be shared equally between all disciplines. Please email info@baat.org in order to check availability also providing evidence of the above (All Art Therapy places have been claimed).
